Madhirimangalam is a village very close to river cauveri and situated on the road from Kumbakonam to Mayiladuthurai(2km from Kuttalam). Its home to a temple for Vishnu worshipped here as Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal.Name of the village Madhirimangalam came from the name "Maal Thiru Mangalam"(the place where perumaal and laxmy married).East facing Perumal temple is situated in West agraharam of Madhirimangalam.
The temple for Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal, which is small in size, faces east as does the Moolavar enshrined in the central sanctum-sanctorum. The stone image of medium size is Lord Vishnu, seated with his consort, Lakshmi on his left lap. Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal is four-armed, the upper two hands holding the conch (sankhu) and discus (chakra), the lower right hand in abhaya hasta and lower left hand encircling Lakshmi. This is a single prakara temple.
The processional image, known by the name "Baktha varadha rajan "who is four-armed Vishnu in a standing pose with Sri Devi and Bhu Devi on either side.
Special pujas are done every week during saturday for Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal and Anjaneya. At present, two main festivals are celebrated in this temple in a year which are Yekadhashi and Samvathsaraabhishegam.
The samprokshanam of this temple in Madhirimangalam took place on the 27th of August, 2007.
History of the temple
One fine morning Lord Shiva and Vishnu were playing dice
(dhayam), with Parvathi as judge, at the end of the game Parvathi declared her
brother Vishnu won , Lord Shiva was angry with Parvathi for her injustice and cursed
Parvathi to change as cow .Parvathi recovered from that curse(paapvimoshan)
after touching Shiva linga in thiruvaavaduthurai temple.
As Lord Shiva met Parvathi after very long time, lord Vishnu
arranged for their marriage in the place called Thirumanancheri (very famous
for marriage), for that lord Shiva came from Kailas with a tree called Uttalam tree,
the place where he landed that place named as Uttalam, now it is changed as Kuttalam
(2 km away from Madhirimangalam).
Vishnu also left Lakshmi for a long time during Parvathi’s curse
to her marriage. So Lord Shiva arranged marriage for Vishnu and Lakshmi in a
place called Villvaaranyam , Lord Shiva as Kailasanathar(swayambu - lingam is
naturally grown from earth) came to the place.
As we know before starting any good things we use to pray God Ganapathy
,presence of Ganapathy is necessary for any type of marriage, but here Ganapathy itself reached the vilvaranyam for the
marriage as "Prasanna Maha Ganapathy"(temple located in the main road
of madhirimangalam). Then Marriage was celebrated for Narayana Perumal and Lakshmi in Vilvaaranyam, due to that, the name of the Vishnu is called as Sri Lakshmi narayana
Perumal. After the marriage of Perumal and Lakshmi, the village got two names
that are " Lakshmi vivagapuram"
and "Maal Thiru mangalam", now the name "Maal Thiru Mangalam"(Maal
– Vishnu ,Thiru – Laxmy ,Mangalam - Marriage) changed as "Maadhirimangalam".
Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal temple is located in the South
west side of Mela Agraharam and the Shiva temple is located in the south East
of the Agraharam.
This type of Agraharam is very rare to find in Villages. Prasanna
Maha Ganapathy temple is north faced temple which is located in the Kumbakonam
to Mayiladuthurai main road of Madhirinagalam.
